Alec Ornstein
For over 40 years Alec Ornstein has been engaged real estate industry, initially as a banker and subsequently, as a developer, operator, and owner for over 30 years.
Beginning in 1980 at Central Federal Savings Bank, Alec ultimately held the position of Senior Vice President for Commercial Real Estate lending and served as a member of the Board of Directors. At the time CFSB held assets of over $1 billion. While there, he was responsible for the origination of commercial real estate loans, acquisition development and construction loans, and real estate joint venture activity with development partners and borrowers. Alec also managed CFSB’s subsidiary corporations which were involved in the construction of HUD section 235 affordable housing on behalf of the bank's Community Reinvestment (CRA) responsibilities. This program centered around the developedment of 35 single family homes in a number of Nassau County communities as well as the management of additional developments including 28 condominium townhomes and the completion of a 69 unit condominium project after foreclosure.
After leaving the bank, Alec joined a local real estate development company where he was responsible for the acquisition of "workout" and distressed construction projects on behalf of the principal of that company. Here, he was responsible for the development and completion of over 150 residential units on Long Island.
Seeking greater opportunity and entrepreneurship, he left that firm and in 1991 founded Ornstein Leyton Company (OLC) with his partner Scott Leyton, as principal and President. Over time and through the present day, OLC has developed well over 1,500 residential units in the New York metropolitan area including apartments, condominium units, Planned Retirement Community units (PRC /aged 55+) and single- family homes, as well as various commercial projects. Alec’s expertise spans the complete spectrum of private development including entitlement approvals, acquisition, finance, construction, marketing and delivery of each development. OLC continues to operate currently completing two PRC projects of approximately 250 units as well as having several new projects in the approval stage pipeline.
In 2015, Alec founded Ornstein Development Company to seek additional opportunities on his own. OrnDev recently finalized the approval of an apartment building with retail stores in Westbury and has two projects under contract going through the entitlement approval process of nearly 200 units in Glen Cove and Riverhead.
Alec is a two- time past President and Chairman of the Board of the Long Island Builders Institute and is active in his community, currently serving on the board of the Head of the Bay Club. In the past he has served on the boards of Temple Beth-El, the American Jewish Committee, the Science Museum of Long Island, and the Suffolk County Holocaust Memorial committee, to name a few.
He resides in Huntington with his wife, Jennifer.
